Wrexham County Borough Council supports 58 primary schools that reflect a wide range of ethnicities, languages, and educational needs. With the support of Larder Cymru, the Council aimed to create a visually engaging and culturally inclusive school menu that could educate children on healthy eating and food origins.
Recognising the important role schools play in promoting healthy habits and cultural understanding, the Council is committed to initiatives that improve pupil wellbeing and foster inclusivity. With growing awareness around food sustainability, child nutrition, and the benefits of celebrating local produce, Wrexham Council sought to modernise its approach to school meal communications.
In partnership with Larder Cymru, an organisation focused on connecting local food systems with education and public sector institutions, the Council set out to reimagine the school menu—not just as a list of meals, but as a tool for learning, engagement, and cultural representation.
The previous school menu had been distributed for years as a basic black-and-white Word document. It failed to capture the colour, flavour, and diversity of the meals being offered.
“We felt it didn’t visually reflect the appeal or variety of the meals provided.”
— Wrexham County Borough Council
The Council had three main objectives:
Promote Welsh produce and locally sourced ingredients
Highlight vegetarian and healthy eating options
Encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables through engaging, educational visuals
.
As a design agency based in North Wales, Made With Zeal drew on deep regional knowledge and prior experience designing for Welsh food and education brands.
To ensure the design was well-received by its audience, the Council led an inclusive consultation process:
The new school menu design was vibrant, inclusive, and educational. Key outcomes included:
Clear visual communication of food types and sources
Boosted interest in vegetarian and fruit-based dishes by introducing ‘Star Choices’—meals highlighted with fun, custom star graphics to stand out and encourage children to try healthier options. The playful design made the meals especially appealing to kids
Improved parent engagement with menu content
Smooth adoption across all 58 schools
Positive reception from pupils and staff
